Don’t Get Crossed Up With Neck, Jaw, Shoulder Or Headache Pain!

Pain in the neck, jaw, shoulders and even headaches can be caused by something called Upper Crossed Syndrome.  It is not a condition that you will hear about from your regular doctor. Yet, Upper Crossed Syndrome is affecting more and more people.  Unfortunately many will unsuccessfully seek relief through use of pain medication, injections and maybe even surgery.

What is Upper Crossed Syndrome?

The muscles of the neck, shoulders and upper back are responsible for keeping your head balanced against gravity. This is truly an amazing feat, especially when your body is moving!  When some of these muscles get overused and their opposing muscles are underused for prolonged periods, like sitting and working at your computer or on your phone or driving, muscular imbalances will occur.  Upper Crossed Syndrome is a specific pattern of muscular imbalance. This pattern consists of tight muscles in the upper neck back by the hairline and in the front of the shoulders combined with weak muscles in the front of the neck and upper back.

How does Upper Crossed Syndrome cause headaches, neck, shoulder and upper back pain?

When muscle imbalances are not addressed, second or even third order consequences are created.  In some cases tight muscles pull on bones and joints in the neck, shoulder and TMJ creating wear and restricting movement causing other muscles to work even harder and get burnt out.  It’s kind of like stepping on the gas pedal and brake at the same time.  Your brakes and engine will both burn out.  In other cases, tight muscles can create compression or tension on nerves and arteries. This can cause headaches and even radiating symptoms down into the arm or upper back. These referred symptoms far away from where the root problem lies can be frustrating for the individual who is suffering and challenging to diagnose for someone who is not trained to look for this.
